Auntie Rosie

The following is a podcast of a descriptive piece on Aunty Rosie

Auntie Rosie • A podcast on Anchor

Never have I ever seen such pride and graceful elegance wrapped up in three hundred pounds of fair, awesome delight. A ball of fire she was but one of nature’s most unique treasures. Auntie Rosie was the queen of our castle, handpicked and delivered by the Creator; Oh, what a joy to be around. The flaunt of a head full of thick, jet black, crisp curls, complimented her rich brown cinnamon complexion and broad cherry smile of her thick, drooping lips.  Auntie’s grinders were like gates of pearly whiteness; crammed in so neatly, as if some were going to fall out of line. Her soft, warm, fluffy bosom, would sink-in with each embrace.

Auntie’s strides were most adorable; with a turn and a twist and a glide she will dance up the screeching, wobbly stairs and into the shaggy wooden out-door kitchen to do her daily chores. This was the most amusing sight; seeing this gigantic creature being upkept by the rickety strips of tattered wood; it was like watching an elephant standing on a of bed of cobwebs.  As villagers passed by, they laughed and scoffed as Rosie’s wide figure seemed to topple over in the tiny battered kitchen as she made her bread.

Auntie Rosie made the loveliest butter bread; her coconut buns and souse were like none other. Rosie was also known for her loud farts and her crackling after, raised everyone’s laughter.  Rosie, got recognition for being a smart mouth, as her words were like fountains of bittersweet expressions.  One minute she was a prayer-warrior, with prayer, praise and singing of a sweet melodious voice to cheer every broken heart. Then before the week ends Rosie’s voice could be heard over all the village commotion throwing sharp words at a neighbor, she had to give a piece of her mind. Auntie Rosie was quite mysterious, at times she could not be understood but was found to be an inspiration to all.

Poetry writing

                                                            https://www.printrest.com

Thinking about interesting ways to get students to write poetry never crossed my mind but the “Poetry Gallery” opening activity was certainly amazing. This activity served not only as a stimulation for us where the words of poets were examined but it also served as period of review and reflection which served as a guide activity as seeing various pieces of poetry exhibited, prepared us for the task ahead. Poetry is often used to express thoughts, feeling and ideas in creative ways. The use of song and rhyme also helped us an adult learner to connect with the world of poetry. We were also given the chance to examine the structures and rhyming patterns to help us to get a clearer understanding of what poetry writing entailed. There is no doubt that these strategies will become instrumental in assist the emergent poets within the literature classroom.

Reading a great descriptive piece has always been my pleasure. Descriptive writing is an art that is not easily mastered but having a background knowledge of some of the techniques that makes for rich descriptive piece does the work and saves the writer time as these techniques help to create incredible descriptive pieces. It must be noted that way too often our children are left with the misconception that descriptive writing only entails the use of multiple adjectives, when employing techniques such as the use of sensory imagery, and figurative language are well capable of painting the most vivid mental picture; as readers are taken on a virtual tour. I have seen remarkable improvements in my personal writing through the use of these techniques and it is for certain that these strategies be used with my student to help build their art of description.

The strategy used by our lecture to before introducing the lesson really stimulated my interest in descriptive writing and left me longing for more. This strategy was extremely helpful as it involved simply reading of various descriptive pieces to get student warmed up to descriptive writing. The activity also gave rise to discussion on the topic and students were able to make connections between their prior knowledge on the topic and some of the new knowledge and techniques that they were encountering.

Balance Literacy Approach

Rob Isbitts (forbes.com)

This week’s session on the Balanced Literacy Approach was quite enlightening. Being exposed to this approach was rather new to me. I loved the introduction strategy that was used by the presenter to stimulate the learner’s interest at the start of the session. This encourages me to carry the same attitude into my classroom where a fun activity is done to begin lessons as a means of stimulating learners’ interest.

When asked what the components of the Balanced Literacy Approach entailed, I struggled with the thought for a while before answering but was still unable to guess even one of the components correctly. After much explanation, of how the traditional approach to teaching literacy may affect students’ success in literacy as Language Arts should be taught using the Balanced Literacy Approach which comprises of Read aloud, Shared reading, Word study Independent reading, Guided reading and Writing and not Language Arts and not as was traditionally done; breaking up Language Arts into the strands or mini subjects such as Grammar, Vocabulary and Comprehension.

Additionally, each of the components of the Balanced Literacy Approach was reviewed and modelled; giving us a clear understanding of how they are used. I then understood how the Balanced Literacy Approach caters for balances literacy among students as it is a best practice approach framework which guides students into proficiency of lifelong reading and writing. I am therefore eager to try this approach with my students.
